MALLET 1683'I(sl)e Cocos' (Des Terres Australes) Tafahi, an island in the Tonga archipelago, was put on the European maps by Willem Schouten and Jacob Le Maire during their famous circumnavigation of the globe in 1616. They named it Cocos Eylant because of the abundancy of coconut palms. In the background is Niuatoputapu, shown on the map as Isle des Traitres; older European names for the island are Traitors island and Keppel island.
